Biography

I am a physician-scientist and vascular neurologist dedicated to reducing the overall burden of stroke and dementia through excellent clinical care and translational research. My lab is broadly focused on cellular and molecular mechanisms of vascular and glial injury related to stroke and cognitive impairment. We use animal, cellular, and 3D models of vascular brain injury together with gene expression and biomarker tools to identify novel diagnostic and therapeutic pathways for cerebrovascular disease. My graduate work focused on identifying age-related changes in axons and myelin in macaques and rodents. In 2012, I received the NINDS R25 Translational Neuroscience Fellowship and completed training in stroke modeling and neural repair with Dr. S. Thomas Carmichael (UCLA). In 2013, I received an NINDS K08 to study mechanisms of axonal degeneration after subcortical stroke. Notably, my lab has participated in several studies that identify cellular and molecular changes occurring within the peri-infarct niche next to small white matter ischemic lesions in both rodents and humans. We have expanded this work to include translational efforts to identify biomarkers for vascular cognitive impairment. Currently, my lab directs multiple drug discovery experiments using animal models of subcortical stroke as well as directing biomarker development for several large national consortia and networks including MarkVCID, DISCOVERY Network, and the DIVERSE VCID study. I am currently Vice Chair of Research, Co-PI of the UCLA R25 Translational Neuroscience Training Grant, and serve as the educational liaison for the UCLA Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program. Through continued excellence and translational effort, we hope to catalyze new diagnostic tools and therapeutic treatments for patients with cerebrovascular disease and post-stroke cognitive impairment.
